# NWSL Team of the Week: Standout Performances From Matchday
With the 2026 NWSL regular season nearing its end, every point matters for teams chasing a place in the postseason. This week’s NWSL Team of the Week recognizes players whose goals, defensive work and leadership made a difference in crucial matches.
Jaedyn Shaw and Lindsey Heaps headline the selections, while Kansas City Current midfielder Debinha delivered a hat trick. The lineup also includes a returning veteran, an NWSL first and several players who helped their teams in high-stakes games.
## NWSL Team of the Week
### Goalkeeper: Kailen Sheridan, North Carolina Courage
With the Courage fighting near the playoff line, goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan helped keep a close match from turning into dropped points. Her timely save on Ryanne Brown’s long-range effort was one example of the reliability North Carolina needs during the season’s final stretch.
### Defenders: Kennedy Wesley, Janine Sonis, Natalie Jacobs and Tara Rudd
San Diego Wave FC center back Kennedy Wesley stood out against Orlando Pride. Her positioning disrupted the Pride attack, and she gave teammates a dependable option as San Diego built from the back.
Denver Summit fullback Janine Sonis earned another Team of the Week selection after scoring her 12th goal of the season. The finish came from an impressive angle, adding another attacking contribution to her work in defense.
North Carolina Courage defender Natalie Jacobs made her first start in more than a month after returning from a head injury. Her presence helped steady the backline during an important win, and the Courage recorded their first clean sheet since September 6.
Washington Spirit center back Tara Rudd made an impact at the other end of the pitch, heading in a cross from fellow defender Esme Morgan to put Washington ahead. The goal showcased the Spirit’s threat on set pieces.
### Midfielders: Lindsey Heaps, Debinha and Lia Godfrey
Lindsey Heaps scored twice for Denver Summit, recording her first brace since 2018. With Denver needing wins to strengthen its playoff chances, the captain’s goals helped secure three valuable points.
Kansas City Current midfielder Debinha scored a hat trick to lead her team to victory. The Brazilian international continued the Current’s run of multiple-goal performances, with the club recording a hat trick for a second consecutive week.
San Diego Wave FC rookie Lia Godfrey scored her sixth goal of the season in a match with playoff implications. Her growing influence in the midfield has made her an important part of the team’s campaign.
### Forwards: Clara Luvanga, Gianna Paul and Jaedyn Shaw
Washington Spirit forward Clara Luvanga scored a late game-winner and made NWSL history as the league’s first Tanzanian goal scorer. It was a memorable milestone in a match where the Spirit needed a decisive moment.
North Carolina Courage forward Gianna Paul made an immediate impression after her recent move from Kansas City Current. She scored the only goal in the Courage’s win, delivering a decisive performance in a game with major playoff implications.
Gotham FC’s Jaedyn Shaw added another standout performance to her season, scoring her 10th goal. Although she is often listed as an attacking midfielder, her movement and finishing frequently see her operate like a forward—qualities that earned her a place in this week’s lineup.
## Coach of the Week: Mak Lind, North Carolina Courage
North Carolina Courage coach Mak Lind prepared his team for a high-pressure matchup against Seattle Reign. With both clubs in the playoff hunt, the result carried extra weight, and the Courage delivered when the opportunity mattered.
## Honorary Captain: Savannah DeMelo, Racing Louisville
Racing Louisville midfielder Savannah DeMelo made her official return after spending more than a year away from the field following a cardiac arrest-related medical emergency during a match. Her return came 384 days after the incident, making it a significant moment for DeMelo and the club.
