# How the 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup Format Will Work
The United States men’s national team will face a revamped group-stage format at the 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup. The tournament will still feature 16 teams, but Concacaf is replacing four groups of four with two groups of eight.
The new structure gives every team an additional group-stage match and creates more opportunities for regional rivals to meet earlier in the competition. The 2027 Gold Cup is scheduled to run from June 17 through July 11.
## What’s Changing in the Gold Cup Group Stage?
Previously, the Gold Cup divided its 16 teams into four groups of four. In 2027, the teams will be split into two groups of eight, with each team playing four group-stage opponents instead of three.
Four teams from each group will advance to the knockout rounds. That means half of the teams in each group will progress, while the expanded schedule gives teams an extra chance to earn points before the elimination stage begins.
Fifteen teams will qualify through the Gold Cup preliminary round. They will join guest nation Saudi Arabia in the tournament.
### How Group-Stage Matchups Will Be Set
Concacaf plans to use ranking bands and a predetermined fixture matrix to decide each team’s opponents. The eight teams in each group will be organized into bands of two, helping create a balanced schedule.
The approach is designed to avoid an uneven draw in which several of the region’s strongest teams are concentrated in a way that limits other teams’ chances of advancing. It is also intended to create more compelling matchups during the group stage.
## Gold Cup Knockout Stage Format
The knockout format will remain largely unchanged. The top four teams from each group will enter a single-elimination bracket, with teams facing opponents from the other group.
Higher-finishing teams will be matched against lower-finishing teams from the opposite group. There will be no reseeding after the quarterfinals, so those results will set the semifinal matchups and shape the route to the final.
## Key Dates for the 2027 Gold Cup
– **Gold Cup draw:** April 8
– **Tournament kickoff:** June 17
– **Quarterfinals:** July 3 and 4
– **Semifinals:** July 7 and 8
– **Final:** July 11
## What the New Format Means for the USMNT
For the USMNT, the expanded group stage means one more match to manage on the way to the knockout rounds. The revised format could also bring tougher or more notable opponents earlier in the tournament, depending on the fixture matrix and group results.
Four teams advancing from each group should keep more nations in contention deeper into the group stage. At the same time, every result will matter as teams compete for favorable positions in the knockout bracket and a place in the quarterfinals.
