Champions League Power Rankings: Quarterfinal Preview
The road to the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League final in Budapest is now paved, and eight elite clubs will resume European action after the international break. Our weekly power rankings evaluate each team’s form, key strengths, and potential obstacles as they prepare for the quarterfinals.
Top Four Contenders
1. Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich remain the frontrunners in our Champions League power rankings. After a convincing 6-1 away win over Atalanta and a 4-1 victory at the Allianz Arena, the German giants have demonstrated both attacking prowess and defensive stability. Star forwards Michael Olise and Harry Kane are in fine form, though the quarterfinal clash with Real Madrid presents a significant hurdle. Should they overcome Madrid, a semifinal showdown with Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool looms.
2. Arsenal
Arsenal secured an unbeaten group stage and dispatched Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16, highlighting Mikel Arteta’s tactical discipline. The Gunners will face Sporting CP in the quarterfinals, before potentially meeting the winner of Atletico Madrid versus Barcelona. Despite a 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, Arsenal remain strong title contenders in both the Premier League and Champions League.
3. Barcelona
Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona have reasserted their continental credentials, notably thumping Newcastle 7-2 in the second leg of the round of 16. Leading La Liga and set to meet Atletico Madrid in the quarters, the Blaugrana possess the firepower and experience to challenge for European glory.
4. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)
PSG bounced back from a mixed domestic campaign to win their round of 16 tie against Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate. With Kylian Mbappé leading the line and a commanding position atop Ligue 1, PSG are poised to test Liverpool in the quarterfinals. Their path to the final could include another heavyweight clash with Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.
Mid-Tier Threats
5. Real Madrid
Real Madrid have been imperious in knockout football, eliminating Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate. The return of Jude Bellingham and Mbappé from injury bolsters their squad depth. Facing Bayern Munich next, Los Blancos are a perennial threat and cannot be overlooked in these power rankings.
6. Atletico Madrid
Diego Simeone’s side advanced with a disciplined performance against Tottenham, reflecting Atletico’s trademark resilience. While questions persist about Simeone’s future, Atletico’s defensive organization and European pedigree make them dangerous opponents in any quarterfinal tie.
7. Liverpool
Liverpool have experienced an up-and-down Premier League campaign but remain dangerous in Europe. Arne Slot’s side will need their attacking trio firing to upset PSG in the quarterfinals. Consistency will be crucial if they hope to advance to the semifinals.
8. Sporting CP
Sporting CP produced one of the biggest round of 16 turnarounds, overturning a deficit against Bodo/Glimt. Although they face daunting opposition in Arsenal, Sporting’s momentum and confidence make them a dark-horse pick for an upset in the quarterfinals.
