The United States men’s national battle Iran on Tuesday in their final group stage match at the World Cup. The goal is simple — the winner of this match will advance to the next round, and the loser goes home. While Iran can technically draw the match and likely advance (pending the Wales vs. England game), the United States have no such luxury in making the last 16. There’s actually a scenario where the USMNT can win Group B, but they need to focus on winning as England losing won’t matter without a victory from Gregg Berhalter’s men.

The United States have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net only scoring one goal during the tournament so far but the defense has shown up allowing only one goal. It has been a tale of two games for Iran who, after allowing six goals to England, tightened things up to win 2-0 against Wales, so it will be tough to tell what team the USMNT will see in this match. This will be the second World Cup meeting between these two teams and the first since 1998 in France, where Iran beat the Americans, 2-1.
